As gravity & a grey beard is mistaken for
wisdom so is sadness and a black Coat for
Virtue.

OBST. DIVINES.
They fail not to perceive that men cannot grow wiser
to the great concerns of Society, but at their expence:
hence an instinctive hatred of all such
wisdom.

DIVINES Adverse to improvement.
I know that [in virtue of the necessary constitution
of man's nature,] the every plan of
extensive & liberal improvement, & this [consequently therefore] if haply
it should be found to come up have attained in any degree
to the character to which it aspires, behoves to
be odious in the eyes not of this or that individual
in particular, but generally of the whole profession:
meaning always so long & no longer as the entail of hereditary
debility that so it shall not have been
cut off.
and that the same influence which if not kept at bay which would a
thousand times over have destroy'd all that is
valuable in the constitution, will not fail
to resist give stout resistance to whatever is consciently calculated for it's
improvement.
Foreseeing this, I think it useful without reserve
or dissimulation, to give this open warning to all those
to whom the good of their country is an dear object of affection
to hold themselves in expectation readiness of it, and
to set their shoulders
against that influence
