Evidence

In the case of written &c evidence, the evidence
may again be termed original when the statement is communicated thus communicated through this medium
to the Judge without the intervention person
writing exhibited to the Judge is the writing of the person
whose statement it purports to contain be: unoriginal
when it is either copied:
1. Taken down at the time by another person from the verbal statement discourse
of the person whose statement it purports to be.
2. Taken down as above, at any subsequent time.
3. Copied from the written discourse written by the person
whose statement it appears to be.

This makes a chain of evidence purporting to be to the same effect:
or say a chain of professedly identical evidence, which chain is consequently weaker and weaker in
proportion to the number of links contained in it.

On the contrary, a chain of evidence to different
facts, and in that respect in different effects is may be stronger
and stronger in proportion to the number of the links
contained in it. This is no chain.

In case of a chain of evidence, having in it
a link or links not original, the links may be either
a of all of the same kind, i.e. either all of parol
or of different kinds: at all parol, all written, or
some of the one kind some of the other. The chain may
be either undiversified or diversified homogeneous or motley.

Out of the multiplication of useless operations, out of the art of making business
arises of course the art or practice of multiplying the hands that are to be employed or concerned in
making it. The By misapplication of a known principle of political economy, this ob
part of the abuse might be decked out in the colours of utility. This is division of labour
and in what more immense proportion has not public wealth been encreased by the division
of labour? But the fact is that by what is called division of labour, more appositely perhaps distribution of labour, the aggregate mass of labour necessary to
the production of a given p work is – not multiplied, but diminished: whereas in
the case here in question, the aggregate quantity of labour employed in the production of the given work,
the given serivce, is
not diminished but encreased and even multiplied.
Nor by such distributions is the quality of the commodity article less injured by such distribution, than the expence of it is encreased. This will be seen as we advance. "The more Cooks the worse
broth" is an aphorism which though not quite so scientific, but which will be seen to be much more apposite to the present purpose. So apposite, that it may be laid down as one inexorable rule, that
in the way of Procedure, any given suit business is worse and worse done, the greater the number of Lawyers, especially
if of different sorts) that are employed upon it.
