3. In the third place, though all sinister interest
were at an end, the mass of interest-begotten prejudice
the erroneous judgements formed and conceptions entertained under
the influence of that sinister interest would remain
unchanged, would continue operating in full force.
A system on this ground must be bad beyond example, it
it can be composed of unmixed evil, if among the bad arrangements
of which enter into the composition of it there
be no admixture of good. By him whose interest
it is to give his support to it, the good points in it
will not only be the only points spoken to, but the only
ones in which he will suffer his attention to fix,
the bad points and in particular such of them as are so
manifestly bad to be regarded as defensible, will not only not be
spoken of, but they if possible they will not be so much
as thought of: the eye of the mind being kept as
constantly steadily as possible kept from pointing itself that way.
From the mass of delay vexation and expence which the
industry of the learned brotherhood has been labouring employed for
so many ages in working up to its present magnitude
result two opposite classes of effects to two opposite descriptions classes
of persons two opposite classes of effects: to the people in
their character of suitors and clients, torment, to the
authors of that torment, comfort: from the torment being the unpleasant
object the eye of the mind will be turned aside from: on the comfort, the pleasant
object it will be remain fixt.
