The case is, that there are among offices there will
frequently be some here and there one which at the time of enquiry have not
scarcely obtained a determinate denomination: none at any rate
no such denomination at least as is comprized in a one single
word, or in any such small number of words as for the purpose
of constituting a denomination can conveniently serve in
the place of one. Witness for example the Bankruptcy
Office just above mentioned. And where the denomination is
thus compounded and long-winded it is apt to admitt
of diversification: the consequence is that since which one person
would look for the office under one name, another gi
would be looking for it under another: in which case
the index would be imperfect unless all those names
were contained in it.

This is a circumstance which in an alphabetical
arrangement is more or less productive of embarassment and voluminousness
where the articles so to be arranged are names of
offices of those factitious and highly artificial entities
called offices.

In regard to entities of this sort, one difficulty where
the index is of the alphabetical kind one difficulty therefore
we see there is that attends the placing finding places for them:
and but another, as we shall see, there is in the word but this difficulty in whatsoever degree embarassing, never is insuperable.

But when these placed, if placed nowhere else
another difficulty which in the case of if names of offices occurs will be found to occurr not unfrequently is that of understanding what is meant by them.
