2. 2. So much for economy. In the next place comes the interest of the service: –
of that branch of the public service which is here in
question, so far as depends upon the aptitude of he
person – appointed to exercise the functions attached fulfill the duties belonging individual, who in the one,
appertaining to the Office way or the other, stands charged with the
duties of the Office.
In this case, the mischief (it must be acknowledged)
is not so prominent – or whereby ascertained – so susceptible
of being exhibited in what is called a tangible shape,
and expressed in numbers, pounds shillings and pence, as in the former case:
it consists in tendencies only not rather than in as postviablefacts.
In the case of sale, what the particulars you may be perfectly sure, has at least
no repugnance for, is the business of the offices for
if he had, he need not, and would not, meddle charge himself with it.
But in the case of the young new made lordling, or
other Honourable or Honourably allied personage, to
whom, by the proposed extinction of the race of purchasers,
the office would entreat, you never could have
any such security or any the smallest chance of it.
For the dealers of this sub-judicial office, this young offset
of nobility of a learned stock has no more relish, than his Brother, for
when a family being is deserved has for those of the clerical
office: what he has a relish for is the instrument money which
he sees tacked to it, and for the sake of which he is finds
himself forced to take upon him the dealing, that being a yoke
which can not be severed from it.
