Sinecures

On the subject occasion of those documents, a natural and
surely not altogether uninteresting question is – in relation
to the real amount actually received on the score of those
several offices was it the design, was it the endeavour,
was it the wish of this Committee that an accurate
conception should be formed? formed by parliament in
the first place, by the people (if so it be that the wish if so the endeavour
to keep the people debarred from accurate information there
be among public men any exceptions) in the next and last
place.

To give return any a direct answer to this question and in print, is an operation
which perhaps might not be altogether as safe as it
seems desirable. But by any person who on whose part
a disposition may have place to form an opinion on the
subject in his own mind, an operation against which in condemnation of
no decision appears to have been yet pronounced either on
the Kings Bench or in the House of Commons, the following
are the particulars which on such an occasion it may among the considerations by which on the occasion of any such enquiry
be of use to him to note. he may find himself assisted.

In relation to No 72.

1. In the first place, as above already observed, the neat amount
being the only amount which for any practical purpose
could directly in a direct way and of itself be of any use, no account statement
is in the whole course of this Report is so much as professed to be given.
