1 VOLUME VOCABULARY Beginng.

The explanations given in the vocabulary and of which it will be composed are
performed for no other way can they be performed [than] either by Definition or Division.

Definition can be called for only in one or other of these two cases
1st Where the Term has but one sense to be defined being a Term not familiar is just instead of a phrase to save circumlocution - it is def defin'd
by that circumlocistory phrase in the room of which it is put - the uses of this such a substitution
are two. 1s referable to the head of brevity, the other to that of
with respect to the first, the circumlocutory phrase being put once for all in the vocabulary, instead of so many times as it would be called for in the System of Codes, the saving affected advantage gained by this contrivance means
[amounts to] in the saving so many words whereof as the circumulocatory phrase consists of (minus
one viz: the term to be defined) repeated so many times [minus one] as the it is called
for. With respect to the 2d, it consists in the facility of apprehension which citaris paribus is found to keeps pace with the simplicity each Article of the proposition.

If it is not to familiar there is no occasion to define it

If it be not put to save circumlocution, there is no occasion to define it neither
it has then some one familiar term [synonymous] which might be substituted in the room
of it - let that be substituted. N.B. The Generic however must have each their definition as well as their subalternate .

2d When the Term to be defined being familiar has more senses than one
capable of being misunderstood for each other The use of the definition here is to discharge it of all but that one which it is thought
convenient to retain.

The senses (or senses which it is convenient to discharge are those, if any, which have ano another
Term to express them, that term having only that and no other that sense alone
The sense which it is convenient to retain is that which has no other term to express it

RULE In Division, care is to be taken that it be exhaustive. Division is called for, when the Term to be divided is [predicable equally of] belongs equally to a
number of Ideas which have their term inspected to express them — there are may these respecting
be specific Terms, and the term to be divided, with reference to them, the
generic Term. But any or all of these may belong equally to a number of
others — then may each of these with reference to each set of those others, be called
also a generic term: and each one of every set of those others with reference to its
specific term — & so on

The first generic term of every such serves, viz: that which has not any other Form
belonging equally to itself and some other, is by the Logicians termed Genus Genarae
The last sets of specific terms, viz: those which have not any other things of sets of Ideas to which
respectively they equally belong, except Ideas Individuals are by them Species in
