Sleep my sweet infant – close they eyes
Sleep my sweet infant – sweet calmly sleep:
Thy mother cannot bear thy cries
And she has other cause to weep –
When the most fond words thy father spoke
Sound truth & honors holiest vow
And every that from thought & every look
I deemed pure & innocent as thou
And – but each oath was every pledge he broke –
Child – mother are forgotten now.
Sleep &c
But wake my as my sleeping sleep &cchild
And let they make me with they gentle smile let they bless smell my bosom bless
so thy faithless father smiled
Such was his look of tenderness –
He knew his power – when he beguild
And used it – used it - merciless!
Sleep
