A word or two may be not amiss respecting
the mode of inquiry and demonstration that has
pursued in the course of this work, pursued as well
as the treading so as in all the succeeding pages – pursued
as in all preceding works that have ever issued
so in all succeeding works that every may issue from
this pen. It is different and altogether
different from any that has ever been pursued by
any other, at least in relation to what goes by the
name of the civil branch of law. Either If this
is the true mode, all others are false: if any other
be the true mode, this can have no pretensions
to that title.

In this an account is taken in every each instance
of the pathological effects, the sensations of pain and
pleasure that in that instance are the result of
the actions or other events that are in question – of
the actions or words which are supposed to call for
the interference of the law, and again of the sensation of
pain and pleasure that are promise to be the result of that interference –⊞ ⊞ in a word of the effects, painful and pleasurable of produced by the action and of by
the law made in relation to it upon the feelings of the persons interested and it is from the balance of this
account that a conclusion is deduced respecting the
propriety that is the utility & thence the propriety of
the law.
