Civil Introd. 6

Two examples both taken from French legislation
will serve to exemplify this difference.

In the course of the first book of the present
work the several ends which the principle of utility
requires to be kept in view in the business of legislation
will be referred to the four heads of Security,
Subsistence, Opulence and Equality. This To these
several objects correspond so many different pursuits
between which it will be shewn there is an unavoidable
rivalry and interference: that the attainment
of them all, each of them in the utmost degree in to an unlimited degree of plenitude
of conceivable plenitude, is physically impossible: that
to obtain the fullest measure possible of them political
blessings taken together sacrifices must be made in
the instance of every one of them: of what nature
and to what effect and amount these sacrifices
must be in each instance will be the object of
inquiry, the subject of which will be investigation
of the effects which the political measures requisite to be taken
with a view to the attainment of these several blessings
promise to have upon the feelings of mankind. Security
on my your part as against personal injuries (of a personal
nature for example) to which but for the protection interposition of the
law I might be stand exposed to sustain by the unconstrained
exercise of natural liberty on your part can not be given
