Death Collateral musings
I say religion: for from religion should come the
most vehement and irreconcilable opposition to such
abomination, if the voice of religion when separated from
the voice of morality and the voice of law were any thing
more better than an inaudible a next to imaginary
whisper, officially smothered and condemned to everlasting
inaudibly silenced byarticles and subscriptions.
The pretended anonimity is among the institutions
taken for the text of one of his published sermons by the religious
Dr Paley: and that property of it by which it is
set at daggers drawn set in undeniable liability against religion is possibly among
the property the properties passed over by him in utter silence.
"In the judicial constitution of this country" her peculiarities
are drawn by him, as the only ones that do not
carry with them that evidence of their propriety, which
recommends every other part of the system.
One of them is the choice made of the House of Lords
as a Court of Appeal from every civil court of judicature:
a supposition which in point of fact is partly ambiguous
partly erroneous: but let that pass: and this appeal the last
and highest. The claim choice not present itself thereupon
to have been suggested by any intelligible fitness
in the nature of the thing as if any ingredient in the
formation of the constitution ever had been. The suggested
say read stand recommended: and the passage if not brought
the nearer to the Reverend Doctors meaning will not be brought
the less near to reason. To enable give to On the part of the legislative body the
possibility faculty of securing obedience to its ordinances woul this self
stiled teacher of political philosophy would be given granted it, or refund it?
