ought to be sent: but without any intimation given either
to Mr Nepean or Mr Bentham has been sent for the evident
purpose of getting rid of it, to the Duke of Portland
(i:e: to Mr King) who has nothing to do with it,
and by whom nothing is to be done in consequence. A few
days after Mr Napean was confined to Fulham by a severe
fit of illness from which he is not yet recovered: but
has written to Mr King on the subject that
the reference to the Duke was made for no perfectly unnecessary
and made for no other purpose than that of evasion
has written to Mr King on the subject in strong
terms. Mr King has but too much assistance
to the devil by writing a confused letter, retrenching
effect a former letter of his in which the Treasury
answer about the 2000 Prisoners above was giving
Mr Bentham was unable to hear any thing at all
on the subject at the Treasury, except that there was such
a reference was made: nor should he have been able to
hear of its having been answered but from the accident
of meeting with Mr King in the secret from whom he
