CERTAINTY Prelud.

The Prediction of the Law is in no case absolute
but depending for it's being verified upon a
long chain of contingencies -

It says not in effect, whatever it may appear -
to say in sound words, "The man who stealeth shall
be hanged" - But "he shall be hanged, if
if he from whom ought is stolen who saw him steal will discover
it — if any one will apprehend the
Stealer — if the Justice will committ him -
if the Gaoler will receive & committ him keep him
if the witnesses will depose against him - if
the Jury will convict him - If the Gaoler
will again receive & keep him — If the
Sheriff's Officer will convey him to the place
of execution — If the Sovereign will suffer the execution to take place without exercising his prerogative of pardoning. if the Executioner will hang
him — a thousand intervening ifs being omitted beside the
