Of (Composition) Ambiguity in construction
Inadvertence may regard either the existence of things or the dependency there is between themAn act of yours may be an act of inadvertence with
respect to the consequences on either of two accounts:
1st. on account of your not being apprised
of the existence of some circumstance which was of the
number of those fromon which the consequences
of it took depended their rise or 2ndly. from not knowing understanding
the dependency or connection there was in point
of causality between that and the other influencing
circumstances taken together and the
eventual consequences: that is the not knowing
that such consequences were likely to ensue
from such or such a circumstance or combination
of circumstances. Instance White swelling Abscess.

Of (Composition) Ambiguity in Construction
Only, alone - how to be used without ambiguityHe alone only can — he can alone do it and so
It may mean either that he can do it without
the assistance of any body else, without meaning to
decide whether other people can do it or no.
Or it may mean that he can do the thing, and
that no other person can
The adjective alone excludes other substantives — other
persons. An adjective is an attribute of the substantive.
The adverb only excludes properly other acts only alone, & not
other agents. The adjective adverb is an attribute not of the substantive,
but of the adjective
This is the only act which he can do — hence then
the word only is an adjective
