LIBELS:
EGOTISM In that a sort of spiritual Anatomy where the inward workings of the mind are to be exhibited, I cannot go out of myself for an example.
But I upon recalling revolving what it was that passed in my mind I must not
that it was because I hated the calumniator in at that moment that I
wished to see him punished, that I consider'd punishment as a kind
of debt which my mind felt itself uneasy till it should see paid —
which as springs of legislative conduct I have reprobated upon the most anxious & deliberate examination reflection
I cannot find that I was lead conducted by any clue of deliberate reasoning, but
driven by the impulse of may passions. I think I offer neither injustice nor
affront to the men in power + + whom I surely have no motive to affront & many to conciliate & I suppose that with more experience and
judgment than myself they may have like passions: & if they have like
passions, that they may have been more strongly influenced by them in proportion
to the proximity of the interest the deficiency of leisure, the infrequency
of the habit of self-distrust in men accustomed to command, and that warmth
of temperament which is the so frequent concomitant of great genius.
I do not think there is any one who will say maintain that there ever was a time an age or nation
which the Arts of calumniation were ever more consummate, carried to a pitch of perfection or the license of exercising
them more unlimited entire.
Ministers indeed have been placed & displaced the furniture of the political has been changed & re-changed
We have drunken of to satiety the poison in it's highest state of exultation: yet
at no time period was were the laws more potent to every purpose of real utility, or the
peace of the society more unbroken, or the general felicity more conspicuous
subject to no ambiguity an experiment in it's kind by it's continuance the unambiguous most perfect & conclusive
They certain were not blamable unless to be human & not prophetic is blamable for not knowing what no yet lay hidden in the womb of time. futurity
By a kind of involuntary experiment in politics [equally novel and important], we have
an axim equally novel & important learnt what no one scarce any would have ventured to pronounce afore-hand, this general under that under
constitution of a certain person, & among a people of a certain degree of civilization
nothing relating to politics that can be said or written can do mischief.
Surprized, comforted & enlightened by this an exemplification so complete of the
colossal firmness of our political government fabric, we acquire a confidence security & unconcern
which no antecedent reasoning could have offended justified:. I hope now a freedom
