(40) §.7. (4) +
2. They not only support themselves, but pay the Salaries
of all the Officers and Attendants about the prison.

3. The expences are thus particularized -
"Diet and lodging, Jailors and Keepers Salaries, Wages of Attendants
"of every kind, Physicians' bill &c. Shoes and Clothes."

4. The employment in which the earnings are made, are
also set down together with the earnings made from each.

5. "All the Accounts are in Pennsylvania currency" says a
Note in the Table:

6. Of the numbers I find not any mention: consequently, neither
of the average number confined in the course of the year,
nor of the average number employed in the earning of these sums.

of the Inspectors, Philadephia 3rd of Dec. 1792, in a Paper intituled
"Extract from the Report of the Board of Inspectors of the Prison."
It occupies the concluding page, being p 108, of a publication
intituled, An Enquiry how far the Punishment of Death is
"necessary in Pennsylvania: by William Bradford Esqr. To which
"is added an Account of the Goal and Penitentiary House of
"Philadelphia, and of the interior management thereof by
"Caleb Lownes of Philadelphia."

8. Absolutely considered, to the purpose here in question the
sums will not be found material: their relation to each other is all that
bears upon the present case.

1. The Expences being £2154" 17" 7", suppose the receipts
exactly equal: applying this to the case of the Claimants' prison, the
cost of it being thus defrayed by the profit on the labour of the Prisoners,
the head money, £12 000 a year, would have been net profit.
2. But
