PRINCIPLE of Utility. Questn. of

In the shapeless tho' compilation of Domat tho' his
design plan does not confine him to the exposition acting the part of an expositor
of a particular system scarce no traces of it
are to be found

Grotius, the first writer who has treated the subject of
Law with any to any extent or with any tolerable judgment,
expressly condemns it

his Laws of Carolina

Locke it is to be imagined from his Essay on Government, if he had written
on the subject we may conclude that would have but out witted this maxim.
Tho' it is to be doubted whether the influence of noxious prejudices
to the conquest of which he pointed out the way but which
he had not yet acquired strengthwas not able himself entirely to subdue
would not have permitted him to be steady have made him waver in their application.

It was not to be expected that Ld. Coke is not to be wondered at that L. Coke should
have paid much regard to it: we find it indeed argumentum ab inconvenienti
to about standing truth in the list of arguments employedarguments from which
byhis Idol Littleton deigned to agree

Littleton a much better author
than his commentator. By how much
better surplus ignorance is than
labored error.

Those venerable personages have scorned knew better than to betray the
dignity of their Science by submitting its principles
to the subordinate jurisdiction of proper human reason
