A Letter from Sir John Parnell
Chancellor of the Exchequer in
Ireland — To the Marquess of Lansdowne
London Augt 6th 1790
37 Wigmore Street
My Lord
I received the honour of your Lordship's Letter in
Ireland with Mr. Bentham's Treatise on Penitentiary
Houses, I have never read a more ingenious Essay
on a Subject of such a nature. I am so convinced
of the Utility of the Plan, that I believe it would
be adopted in Ireland; but I do not know —
whether I am at liberty to have the Treatise
Copied, I have the Original with me, and shall
return it, when I know where to send it.
I am very much obliged by your Lordships
goodness to me, and beg leave to trouble your
Lordship to return my thanks to Mr. Bentham
for his having been so obliging as to give me
an opportunity of receiving the benefit of his
Information on a Subject with which humanity
