Dear Sir,

In answer to your favour of this day, I can assure
you it has not been my fault that you have not heard
from my youngest Son. And all I can say for him,
his behalf is, that he has been so much engaged in the
war between the Russians & the Turks & has taken so active
a part in it, that it may well be supposed it has taken
his thoughts from every thing else; It is even a long
time indeed since I heard from him; and all that
I have heard of him, is by means of a Transcript
of a Letter from a Friend of his at Petersburg to his
Mother here of the Date & in the week fo following

Petersburg July 30. O.S. 1789

I am extremely happy

which transcript was transcribed to me by my Eldst Son
when I was at Bath the 6th Oct. last.

It is possible my Son the Coll may have written to me
but if he has, his Letter has never reached me or perhaps
what is equally possible the Intercourse between Cherson &
Petersburgh may have been so difficult & hazardous,at
on account of the heat of War, that he might be dissuaded
from attempting it. However I shod be glad you wod sent to
him in ever so pressing; if you cod direct your Letter
to any some Person of being capable of forwarding it to
him at Cherson
