Extracted from S.B.'s Letter dated June 18.1784. O.S.

Prince Potemkin's Estate is called Kreetchoff. It is in the
Province of White Russia, about 100d Versts from Mohilow
near the Borders of Poland from which It was separated
in the last division of that Countrey: Riga is the nearest
Port in the Baltic.

It is less than 600d Versts from Riga to Kreetchoff,
therefore about 3 days journey at the rate People —
travel there.

Vitepsk is about 200d Versts from Kreetchoff, and
heavy Luggage may be transported so far by —
water up the Divina.

You will have heard before this time of my being —
appointed Lieutenant Coll in the Army; a favour, which,
I am told, has never been conferred before on either
Foreigner or Native who had not previously a Military
Rank. The Regiment, which I am of, is at Cherson
where my occupations will lead me, from time to time,
not however so much on that account as I shall
have little to do with Military Concerns. The advantage
I enjoy from the being in the Army, over and above
that of the degree of Consideration which it procures
me, is the being dependent on Prince Potemkin
alone; It is now about 3 months since we set out
from Petersburg of which the last fortnight has been
spent in this most Charming Peninsula which is
annexed to the Russian Empire.

As the Prince has taken me for some time past
always in the same Carriage with him you may be
sure
