Cherson Decr 1787 O.S.
I received 2 days ago the letter you wrote me at setting out from
troubled with fears about your travelling Servant. Nothing that I
could do with respect to Passport would be of any use: and I could
never see the great danger or even difficulty in the matter unless
some friend of Jacob Pavolitz were Commander at the Barrier
where you were to pass the boundaries.
A I received at the same time a letter from Notman by which
I learnt that a letter of mine to him reached him 3 days
after your departure and consequently other letters of mine
to you which were sent by a person from hence who was not
there arrived, will not reach you, for in case of your being
gone I desired my letters to be returned. I wonder you
should think of sending letters to me through Notman
