Preface or Introduction

This work had for its object the placing of mans interests and duties in every situation matter of private life in as clear and satisfactory a point of view as possible.

To this purpose it is necessary to bring to view the relation between interest and duty, the relation between both of them on the one hand and Virtue and Vice on the other, together including with the initial relation between several intermediate objects [the number of which is continually and necessarily occurring in every book which takes the field of morals for its subject.]
