Fallacies Introduction Prefat
1
Hope of usefulness less
than when written
While occupied in the perusing of these papers (i.e. Fallacies)
not inconsiderable was my expectation of hope estimation of the
quality of service which by means of them I flattered myself
with the hopes of rendering in the first place to my own
country, in the next place to mankind at large
As to what In so far as concerns my own country
these hopes have since that time been sadly [but too greatly] lowered.
Only in so far as they it may have the effect of setting
the judgment right of giving a right turn to the judgment
of those on whose conduct in order to produce any
effect in practice it is necessary they should operate — only
in so far as they have are followed by this effect can they
be productive of any effect at all in practice.
But in the supposition of their being in this way productive of a benificial
effect in practice is included the supposition that the or in the minds persons
a predisposition has place to peruse promote on all occasions, or at
any rate on reconsider of the greatest importance the universal
interest though it were at the expence of every other: whereas the disposition
which in that these minds as well as in all others is the
directly opposite disposition: the disposition on the part of each person to promote at the expence
of every other interest to promote each man his own self-regarding
interest.
