Question 1 How many and what are the principal known
means or instruments of promptitude, of dispatch, of abbreviation?

Answer — arithmetical
signs.

Question 2 What is the first the earliest that
which it as is known from particular history or it
seems reasonable to suppose from the nature of the case, was
the first employed?

Answer. The employing of the arithmetical signs instead
of the words of which they are expressive may be regarded
as the instrument first employed.

The second, substitution
of the present signs
to those formerly in use.

Question 3 What is the second?

Answer. A As a second means, and distinguishable from
the former, may be said to be considered the substitution, of the
systems of signs now in use, to those before that time in
use in the most civilized nations.
