any number of lines he pleased, all of them to a certainty<lb/>
equal to one another. but how is it that he knows<lb/>
that they are thus equal? Only by this that there are so<lb/>
many <add>superficial or ideal</add> lines, marked out<del>,</del> by the same <hi rend="underline">linear solid</hi>, if so<lb/>
it may be <sic>stiled</sic>, in its progress, from the side it set out<lb/>

<p>Thus it is that in this case the idea of <hi rend="underline">equality</hi> grew<lb/>
out of the idea of <hi rend="underline">identity</hi>: &amp; this it is that by means of the<lb/>
identity the equality as between line and line is <sic>shewn</sic> and<lb/>
rendered unquestionable.</p>
 
<p>By this consideration an objection which had presented<lb/>
itself to this mode of proceeding, on an occasion that soon<lb/>
after followed, w<hi rend="superscript">d</hi>. had it occurred in time have been obviated.</p>
