| <p>On all the occasions <unclear>here</unclear> in question, as on all other<lb/>occasions, the one thing needful <add>for a man to know</add> is to know what will be<lb/>most conducive to his own happiness; to his own, and<lb/>on that account to the happiness of all such other persons<lb/>whose happiness is in any way at stake. So long <add>In so far</add> as this<lb/><unclear>point</unclear> can be satisfactorily determined, whether <add>to</add> the <gap/> of<lb/>conduct prescribed by that <add>such</add> regard to <add>human</add> happiness <gap/> is that<lb/>one of the several appellations of <del><gap/></del> pride, elevation of<lb/>mind, independence of mind, <del><gap/></del> humility or<lb/>meanness, is <add>but</add> a question of words — a question concerning<lb/>the <unclear>import</unclear> of words — and as such, <gap/> in so far as the <add>other men's</add><lb/><unclear>afflictions</unclear> of other men and influenced by their associations<lb/>with those words of no practical importance</p>
