Confinement of Offenders, Male and Female, who
have received Sentence of Transportation within the
City of London and Country of Middlesex.

WHEREAS an Act passed in the Nineteenth year of the Preamble.
Reign of His present Majesty, intituled, " An Act to explain
"and amend the Laws relating to the Transportation,
"Imprisonment, and other Punishment of certain
"Offenders:"

And whereas another Act passed in the Thirty-fourth year of the
Reign of His present Majesty, intituled, "An Act for erecting a
" Penitentiary or Penitentiary Houses, for confining and employing
"Convicts:"

And whereas Penitentiary Houses have not yet been erected; but
certain Lands and Premises have been purchased of the Most honourable
the Marquis of Salisbury, in Tothill Fields, and a Conveyance thereof
made to Jeremy Bentham Esquire, under the Authority of the said
last recited Act; and the same thereby became vested in the said
Jeremy Bentham, as Feoffee, for the purpose of the said Act:

And whereas it is expedient that a separate Penitentiary House should
be built, for the purpose of confining Offenders convicted of transportable
