1821. June 4.
To Carvalho
Now as to the great event, which he had
done so much towards bringing about, and, in relation to
which his sympathy with me, and the sincerity of his exultations
are above dispute. Other particulars relative to the notice
taken of me by your government, he had been kind enough
spontaneously to translate for me, and bring to me:
translations of extracts from your Letters to him: and of the passage
in the Astro da Lusitania of April 14, speaking of what
had passed in the Cortes of the 13th. Upon the arrival of those
definitive and growing documents, I sent, as of course, to request
the favour of a translation at his hands. He accordingly
sent me a translation of the Secretary's Letter: but when, at the
same time, he was spoken to about the Minute of the Cortes,
and the Direction given by that Assembly to the Regency, he declined
-saying, there would be no use in it. This not being
my opinion, after putting a somewhat more English dress upon
his translation, I contrived by the keep of Dictionaries and friends,
to cobble up a translation of the two other documents.
