<head>Of the Punishments belonging to the Moral Sanction.</head>

<p><gap/> we indeed to enguin <gap/> into the distribution between the nature of the political &amp;<lb/>
<del>the</del> moral <del>of those two</del> sanctions it would come out that, of the evils which when<lb/>
considered as <gap/> from the moral sanction I have stiled <hi rend="underline">casual</hi> evils some <gap/> more<lb/>
likely to be brought upon a man by the action of one of these sanctions<lb/>
and some others by that of the other. But as to the species<lb/>
of evil this is all the distinction we shall be able to make<lb/>
out; for there is not any evil which the exertion of one of these<lb/>
Forces may bring upon a man but <del>what</del><add>which</add> may also be brought<lb/>
upon him by the action of the other. <!-- break symbol --> The most studied and artificial<lb/>
torments, for instance, that can be invented by a<lb/>
political magistrate, and the most unlikely for a man to be<lb/>
<del>made</del><add>exposed</add> to suffer by the unassisted powers of nature, or even<lb/>
<del>by</del><add>from</add> the unauthorized resentment of an individual, are<lb/>
what he may by accident be exposed to from the latter souree.<lb/>
It may be for want of some evidence that an individual<lb/>
might furnish, and from ill will forbears to furnish, that<lb/>
I may have been doomed to these torments by a Judge, or<lb/>
if <del>[you suppose]</del> the like torments <add>he supposed to be</add> inflicted by the unauthorized<lb/>
violence of an enemy, they may be attributed in the first<lb/>
place indeed to the vengeance of that enemy, but in the second<lb/>
place to the disesteem and ill will born me by some stranger,<lb/>
who having it in his power to rescue me, yet exasperated against <add>me</add></p>
