C
Punishment
3. His feet at the same time shall be inclosed
with in a pair of iron boots, made to open so as to receive
them, and kept connected and separated by
an iron bar going across from heel to heel
4. To each boot may be fastened weights
heavier or lighter according to the discretion of
the Judge.
This is the afflictive punishment for Highwayman:
that is to say, Robbers, when they go out to rob
on horseback or in a carriage.
Note
The punishment of Pickeering and Riding the wooden horse have sometimes been employed
in England among the soldiery for military
offences. On account of it's their severity they
have not been much in use used of late. On this account
as well as that of analogy they seem
better adapted to the purposes to which they
are have proposed to be applied. Punishments
which are at once of so exemplary
and so characteristic a nature, should not be
lavished upon slight occasions.
Fast bound in misery
and iron.
As to The wooden horse I have changed it into
an iron one. The sound of Iron is more terrible
than wood. The notion of a wooden horse seems to border upon the ridiculous:
and is therefore better suited to the purposes of
mere ignominy than terror. Wooden Horses are play-thing,
owned by children.
