Expository Part Constitutional Code

Chapter 1 III. Reasons giving Parts
Ch. 1. Name – Territory – Divisions – Authorities
§. 1. Name – Territory – Divisions.

() (1) (Districts &c) Those several nominations Question. This plan of nomenclature for what purposes
have they has it been chosen?

Answer. To afford indication of the mutual relations
between the of portion and portion the portions
of territory they which the several denominations are employed to designate: by no other plan
of nomenclature can this indication be afforded. With regard
to the several relations, the several denominations are characteristically
significative. In the nomenclature of no State are is
any the set of denominations possessing this quality as yet to be
found. Yet, as between measure and measure in all other instances the convenience, resulting
from significancy & uniformity as between measure and measure of denomination, though it difficult is universally
recognized. In Yet, in those instances, the establishment is necessarily
attended with no small difficulty: – any would attend
it in the present instance.

As to the word District, be it is customarily employed designated a Division
of territory of any magnitude: it is employed without reference made to magnitude, absolute or relative. This then may without inconvenience
be taken for the integer of the several subsequent
fracti divisions and factions.

Of For the idea of means mode in which the number of the steps
times in which the operation of divisions has been repeated
is designated the French language f affords a precedent – being the
name for Grandfather, is Great grandfather,
Great-great-grandfather.
