§. Discouraging prospects – faint hope at the further end

It is a perplexing disheartening situation, though unhappily
not a very uncommon one, that a man is in, where
by every each advance he makes in the investigation of
rational and useful feature degree of utility in his own conception that he succeeds
in giving to his plans, he lessens appears as likely and even in his
own expectation to lessen, as likely as to encrease, instead of encreasing, his chance of seeing them the probability of their
being accepted.

But if this an endeavour of this sort, if it be the
resource of despair, is the only resource course in which a man
who means honestly, and would do good if it were if he could, and
as much as he could his power, behold his sole resource.
