Ld Salisbury blameless
My Lord, as the occasion necessity so is it continually
recurring for I introducing the nature
of the Marquis of Salisbury, it can and in
circumstances of so much suspicion, it would be
injustice in me not to take the earliest opportunity
of clearing it of all reproach. Admitting
it to be a job, and a job for the benefit
of the noble Marquis still paradoxical
as it may seem it would not be the less true
that not the slightest imputation would attach
upon the character of the noble Marquis that noble person upon
the score of it. That If he had said I want
an extra price, give me that extra price, then
indeed there would have been , to
the amount of the excess of it of the difference
between the excessive price and the reasonable one.
But my Lord I can not take upon me
to say – all circumstances considered that there
is any excess in the price. That I the money
of my own to lay out The Surveyor General
reported the as a fair proper price. But without
entering into any question about persons
situation considered I look upon my own
testimony in this behalf as worth more to
the Noble Marquis than that of half a dozen
Surveyor Generals. Had I the money to buy
out with the prices that a proposition of
turning the land to account – I should not look
upon the purchase of it as a bad purchase at
that price.
