Answer
Query 6
May be so, (I think I hear Mr Chief Inspector
saying) but, that I may see whether it be so or no, let
me see Your correspondence with the Treasury. — No, Sir;
say I: and for this reason. You may read my correspondence with the Treasury
from the beginning to end, and you will see no more of
the matter than you see now. In no part of the correspondence
is there any thing about the particulars of the
application to be made of the £2,000. The application
on my part, verbal oral: the consent verbal oral: when
obtained granted, to me and with that (I remember) without reluctance;
to a <add>orally made by me for the purpose of keeping
up my credit with my Banker: in the letter + + 6 May 1794. to designate ☞ Copy the Letter
Mr Secy Long to Mr
Bentham
the application, no other words than these. Tw "two
thousand pounds towards carrying your plan into execution."
The fact here asserted by me is a negative: by
a single letter and this a negation insuring of in relation to which the whole
correspondence would not afford any other a gap/> tittle of proof than
what is in addition to what here already said.
If any letter can be produced, indication of the any
such specific appropriation as is here negatived denied by me there
is th my denial in respect of it false: but no such
letter exists.
As little will any person be found, to assert speak of any such
<?del> appropriation as having been stipulated for, in any oral
conversation.
27 June 1798
28 Rep Com. of Fin
This evidence of mine of course the
examination of these the several official persons to whose
conduct it had become necessary for me to allude:
as in one instance, by any one person, was the correctness
of it now : and, from by the whole tenor of it
it may be left to any one that reads to judge, whether there were not
more
more persons than one,
and that if no income
account, to whom the
possibility of controverting
it would not have
been <lb/.un acceptable.
