Resemblence between the several modes of falsehood
It is obvious enough that offences by falsehood must will in many respects
admit of merit a joint consideration. They are all but so
many different ways of effecting the same purpose,
that of putting a deceit upon some person or other
and causing him to take some fact for true and real which to p. 19

The only distinction between forgery and simple
falsehood turns upon two points: in the first place upon the grand distinction that
takes place between those phenomina that act as
serve as signs for the communication of ideas, that
to act according to which they are denominated either consistent
or permanent: in the next place upon the nature of the fact avowed: which in the first instance is avowed. This aspect in simple falsehood may be any fact whatsoever: in forgery it can only be a fact respecting the personality of a certain individual: viz: the fact that the person who wrote or executed the instrument in question was such or such a person The distinction between
simple falsehood and forgery on the one hand
and perjury on the other turns merely upon the circumstance
of the volumity which by appointment
of law is made to accompany the averment in the
latter case and not in the other.

The distinction between simple falsehood on the one hand
and personation on the other turns upon the last
only of the two former on which the distinction between
simple falsehood and forgery turned. In simple falsehood
