10 July 1808 + Answer C
Answer
Query 3
(1
Answer to Paragraph intituled Query No 3
Requisition the first [— [2] "He '(the Accountant)' is
"required to account for the reason they" (viz. certain
"of the Invoices) were not received as the other original
"Invoices"]
[Answer.] It was only by a sort of accident
that any of the invoices came into my hands. The
occasion of it was — my disposing selling off the cast iron
in the manner mentioned in my Answer to the
Query No 6. [It was then for the first time that
I made any inquiries or felt any practical reason
for desiring to be information on the subject] It was
on that occasion for the first time, and for that purpose
that it became material to me to be observe such
documents as were t be had in relation to these goods.
I either wrote or sent to my Brother's (General Bentham's) for that purpose.
Personally, if I do not misrecollect I had no conversation with him on the subject:
he was away in In his quality of Inspector General
of his Majesty's Naval works, he was about that time
every now and then out upon journeys: this I believe
was the case at the time in question: and that it
was accordingly in his absence, and from his
wife, that I received the from such papers as a search
instituted made in consequence of which my application had
been able to produce: and this without any verbal communication
on the subject between him her and myself.
But on this subject, the best recollection I can muster
up, is very indistinct and indeterminate. It was only for the
particular purpose above mentioned, that I took any steps for
getting
[+] (the Bills drawn on
me and honoured by
me excepted) for
getting into my possession
the documents in question.
Of any other purpose I had no conception of
any other that purpose
being answered, the whole
business fell out of my
mind. Till that time
thoI had never seen them:
nor so much as
a thought on them, except for on the occasion of my evidence, given to the Finance Committee as above. Being at that time assured of their being in my Brother's
possession, I spoke of them as being in mine. To the purpose
then in question there was no difference.
