The War of Chocim
A Historical Poem
By Krasicki
Canto.1.
Event what took place in the year 1621.
Already by its sword's all-conquering fame,
That nation, sent the scourge of God, was known'
Already long thro' plunder blood and flame
Had it uncheck'd its fell carier held on;
Unsated still with slaughter, it became
Prouder by power more fierce by conquest grown
While half the trembling world its sway confest,
Threatening it shook its iron rod o'er the rest.
Fallen Greece! [o'er thy wide-spreading]on thy majestic ruins, high
The haughty Moslem rear'd his [might] tyrant throne;
[Crush'd by his power how many] How many desolated or nations lie!
[Beneath his sway]In dust how many suffering kingdoms groan!
Towns, towers in ashes sink; by his stern eye
Dismay'd, their terror trembling [nations]millions own,
Shuddering in dread when [they beheld display'd]with half stifled breath
Raised for the deadly blow his keen - edg'd blade.
They saw him lift the scimitar of death.
