of punishment rest solely on speculation. The opinion experience
appears to have testified strongly in favour of of its efficacy [has been confirmed] appears to have received
strong confirmation from experience.

Speaking of the Cells in Newgate, "I was told" says
Mr Howard† † Howard 152., that by those who attended me, that criminals
"who had affected an air of boldness at the trial
"and appeared quite unconcerned at the pronouncing
"sentence upon them, were struck with horror, and shed
"tears when brought to these darksome solitary abodes."

The effect thus wrought upon of some of the most
hardened of malefactors was produced by a part only
of the combination of punishments here proposed spoken of. Solitude
is the only one one of the three ingredients
which appears to have been administered on its
most efficacious form. The scene was gloomy,
but not dark. The circumstance of the diet is not
mentioned. The impression was made without it,
and before there could be time for trying it.
