and general impression. – He knew it might
be said that to separate bankrupt cases
from this jurisdiction of the Chancellor
would diminish his emoluments too much.
He did not think it would – but even if
it did, he should not hesitate to augment
for his salary. Such a consideration ought not
to be weighed against the inconvenience of
separating from the office the duties most
essential to its character. No one who knew
anything of the nature of our a Court of Equity could think
that the experiment of rendering the Chancellor
a mere judge of appeals as one to be lightly
lightly hazarded. He could not take too
early an opportunity of guarding the house
against the adoption of such a measure
at this late period of the session. Where the
evil was unquestionable and the remedy
obvious no time ought to be lost in the
alleviation. But here it was far from
being clear that the plan suggested in
this report was the proper m remedy
and in a matter of importa such importance
a short time was not of so much consequence
as that the house should distinctly see the grounds
on which it proceeded. –
