the business that had been done during in the Court
of Chancery during the 10 last years of
Lord Hardwicke's Chancellorship – and during the
10 last years up to the present time. But it
afforded no information as to the business
that remained to be done. have Now the business
actually done in the had greatly diminished in in
the latter period. It appeared from the Report that
the number of original causes decided on in the
period between from 1745 to 1755 inclusive
was 1638 while the number decided from
1800 to 1810 amounted only to 570 incuding
consent causes – that during the former period the
number of decisions upon Exceptions and
further directions was 712, as in the latter
only 411 – that the pleas and demurrers decided
in the form earlier period was were 274, in
the 10 last years only 180. In these particulars
therefore it was obvious that the business
actual actually done in the 10 last years, did
not amount to one half half of what
had been done in the 10 latter years of
Lord Hardwicke's Chancellorship. It would be a
very unjust inference from this statement
however to conclude that the business in
the Court was in reality diminished. It
was not diminished. There was as much
business for the Court to do in these last years in
as there was in had been in the time of Lord Hardwicke
