<p>[Corruption]  Here follows.  <hi rend="underline">Corruption analysed</hi>.</p>
 
<p><add>Definite</add> Corruption has place where, by means of some benefit to<lb/>
 
himself, a functionary is made to violate his trust.</p>
<p>1.  On the occasion the following points <add>things</add> full to be considered:  namely<lb/>
1.  The sinister effect <add>produced</add>: viz. mischief <add>in some shape or other</add> to the public service.<lb/>
2.  The nature of the benefit – call it <add>say</add>, consideration had of the effect the<lb/>
sinister benefit received.<lb/>
3.  The <del><gap/></del> person corrupted – say the corrupt<hi rend="underline">ee</hi>.<lb/>
4.  The <del>person</del> <add>hand</add> by which the <add>sinister</add> benefit <del>it immediate way <add>or con</add></del> is received:  namely, the corruptees one or <add>some other<lb/>
say the receiving hand,</add> and to whom accordingly a correspondent <hi rend="underline">sinister-service</hi> is in that same way rendered.<lb/>

corrupted, the corruption <del>the corruption</del> <add>and thence the sinister</add> effect is produced.<lb/>
5.  <add>Corruptor.</add>  The party benefited by the sinister effect.<lb/>
6.  <add>Immediately corrupting hand.</add>  The hand by which the <add>sinister</add> benefit is administered <add>applied</add>.</p>
<p>2.  1.  As to the sinister effect of the corruption.  This, <add>considered</add> in its general<lb/>
complexion is violation of the trust in question:  of the trust,<lb/>
correspondent to the power, with which in virtue of his office<lb/>
the functionary on whom the corruption operates is invested,<lb/>
or if <del>it be the</del> functions be no other than such by the exercise<lb/>
of which no <unclear>power</unclear> is exercised, the duties attached to the situation<lb/>
of the corruptee.  This object here proposed being the prescribing <add>keeping</add><lb/>
as far as possible, <add>excluded</add> corruption wherever it is liable to<lb/>
have entrance, or at any rate the keeping excluded as far as<lb/>
possible <del>the</del> whatsoever <unclear>evil</unclear> effect it is pregnant with, the effect<lb/>
must <add>to this purpose</add> be pronounced to be in every case evil:  in what particular<lb/>
shape will depend upon the particular nature of the function<lb/>
attached to the particular office whatsoever it be, and the correspondent<lb/>
truth or <gap/> of which the violation is produced.</p>

[Corruption] Here follows. Corruption analysed.

Definite Corruption has place where, by means of some benefit to
himself, a functionary is made to violate his trust.

1. On the occasion the following points things full to be considered: namely
