<!-- ENTER TRANSCRIPTION BELOW THIS LINE --<head>To all PERSONS concerned in BUILDING.</head><lb/><note>BUILDER'S ACT</note>September 21,1772.<lb/>WHEREAS an Act was made and passed in the last<lb/>Session of Parliament, instituted, "An Act for the better Regulation<lb/>of Buildings and Party-Walls within the Cities of London and Westminster,<lb/>and the Liberties thereof, and other the Parishes of St, Mary le Bonne and<lb/>Paddington, St. Pancras, and St. Luke at Chelsea, in the County of Middlesex,<lb/>and for the better preventing of Mischiefs by Fire within the said<lb/>Cities, Liberties, Parishes, Precincts, and Places, and for amending and reducing<lb/>the Laws relating thereto into one Act, and for other Purposes:"<p>And whereas it is, amongst other Things, in the said Act enacted, "That <lb/>from and after the 24th Day of June 1772, in all Buildings to be built within<lb/>the Limits of the said Act, the Rules, Directions, and Restrictions therein<lb/>prescribed, shall be duly observed by all Persons therein concerned, and that no<lb/>House or other Building shall thereafter be erected, but such as shall be pursuant<lb/>to such Rules and Orders of Building as are therein particularly appointed."</p><p>And whereas the Builders who solicited for and obtained the said Act, have<lb/>appointed a Committee to carry the same effectually into Execution, and to<lb/>proceed against such Persons as have or may offend against the same.<p></p>And whereas the said Committee have Reasons to believe, that many Persons offen <unclear>|</unclear>through Ignorance of the Law;</p><p>They did therefore order, at a Meeting held this Day, that an Abstract of<lb/>the Rules, Directions, and Restrictions contained in the said Act, be printed<lb/>in the daily News-Papers, for the Information of all Persons concerned<lb/> therein, which Abstract is as follows:<p>"And be it further enacted, by the Authority aforesaid, That if the Front<lb/>or Rear Wall of any House or other Building for Habitation, which from and<lb/>after the said 24th Day of June 1772, shall be erected or built within the Limits<lb/>aforesaid, shall be built, made, or carried up, otherwise than with Brick or <lb/>Stone, or Brick and Stone together (except as therein is excepted); or if any<lb/>such Front Wall shall not be built and carried up from the Foundation of such<lb/>House or other Building, to the full Height of 18 Inches above the Gutter;<lb/>or if any such Wall shall not be coped with Stone, Tile, or Brick; or if any<lb/>such House, or other Building, which shall be erected, shall not have such<lb/>Party-Wall and Walls, Flank or Side Walls wholly of Brick or Stone, or of<lb/>Brick and Stone together (except as therein excepted); or if any such Party-<lb/>Wall, Flank or Side Wall of every House or Building, the Expense of build-<lb/>ing and finishing of which shall not exceed 120 l. shall be two Bricks and an Half's<lb/>Length thick in the cellar or lowest Story, and two Bricks Length thick<lb/>from thence upwards tot the Garret Floor, and from the Garret Floor upwards<lb/>one Brick and an Half's Length, and shall be carried up 18 Inches above the<lb/>Roff or Gutters adjoining thereto; and in every House or Tenement the Ex-<lb/>pence of builing and finishing of which shall not exceed 120 l. the Walls shall be carried up to a like Heighth, but may be a Half a Brick's Lenght less in<lb/>Thickness than the above; or if any Bricks other than good, found, hard, well-<lb/>burnt Bricks, shall be laid, put into, or used in any such Party-Wall, Flank<lb/>or Side Wall; or if any Timber (other than Girders, Binding and Trimming<lb/>Joists, and Templets under them, and other than necessary found square Bond<lb/>Timbers; or if any Timber of the Roof (except the Purloins and Kirbs there-<lb/>of, and Gutter-Plates) shall be laid into any Party-Wall, Flank or Side Wall<lb/>as aforesaid; or if any Girder, or Binding or Trimming Joist shall be laid into<lb/>any Party-Wall, more than nine Inches; or if the Ends of any Girders, Bind-<lb/>ing or Trimming Joists, in any adjoining House or other Buildings, shall meet <lb/>or be laid opposite to each other; or if the Sides of any Girders, or Binding<lb/>or Trimming Joists, in any adjoining House or other Building, shall not be of<lb/>the full Distance of nine Inches from each other; or if any Roof over<lb/>any such Projection shall be higher than the Sill of the one Pair of Stairs Win-<lb/>dow of such last-mentioned House or Building; or if any Timber Building,<lb/>Erection, or Projection whatever, other than Door Cases, Window Frames,<lb/>Shutters, Story Posts, Breast Summer Fronts to the Ground Floor Story, and<lb/>Cornice to the Breast Summer Fronts, shall be built or erected in the Front or<lb/>Rear, or on the Top of any House or Building; or if any Persons or Persons<lb/>who shall build against any Party Wall, or End or Side Wall, shall make any<lb/>Indent of more than four Inches for inserting any Partition-Wall and Jambs<lb/>of Chimnies therein, or shall make in any adjoining Front Wall an Indent more<lb/>or deeper than four Inches for the better adjoining of the Front Walls between<lb/>House and House, or shall cut into any other Part of any such Wall to any<lb/>greater Depth than five Inches for the laying of Stone Steps into the same,<lb/>or more than four Inches for laying Stairs or Steps of Wood; or if any Cor-<lb/>nice or Projection of Wood, except to Shops, having Breast-Summer Fronts,<lb/>and to Frontispieces of Doors, and such Bow Windows as are thereby autho-<lb/>rised to be made, shall be put or <unclear>soffered</unclear>in any Front or Rear Wall of any<lb/>House or other Building already built or hereafter to be built within the Limits<lb/>aforesaid, or other Wall fronting to any Street, Lane, or Place; or if the Jamb<lb/>or Back of any Chimney to be built within the Limits aforesaid, shall not be at<lb/>least one Brick and an Half or 13 Inches thick in the Cellar or lowest Story,<lb/>and one Brick or nine Inches to the upper Story; or if any With within the<lb/>Inside of any Chimney shall be less than four Inches thick; or if any Funnel<lb/>in any such Chimney shall not be plaistered or pargetted within and without, or<lb/>if the Flue of every Chimney on the Outside of every Party-Wall next to any<lb/>vacant Ground shall not be Lime-whited from the Bottom to the Roof of the<lb/>House or Building; or if any Chimney hereafter to be built within the Limits<lb/>aforesaid shall not be turned or arched under the Hearth with Brick, except in the lowest Story; or if any Timber shall lie or be placed nearer than five Inches<lb/>to any Chimney, Funnel, or Fire-Place; or if any Mantle between the Jambs<lb/>of the Chimney shall not be arched over with Brick, or set upon an Iron Bar or<lb/>or Iron Bars; or if any Wood or Wainscot shall be placed or affixed to the Front<lb/>of the Jamb or Mantle nearer than five Inches from the Inside of such Jamb<lb/>or Mantle; or if any Stove, Boiler, Copper, or Oven shall be set up, placed, or<lb/>hung, otherwise than with Brick or Stone, or both; or if, for or on any Account<lb/>or Pretence whatever, any Party-Wall, or End or Side Wall whatever, shall be<lb/>cut into or wounded (except as is therein excepted); or if any Door-Case, Win-<lb/>dow, Window-Frame, Lentil, Breast-Summer, Story Post Plate, or Timber (all<lb/>necessary Bond Timber as aforesaid excepted) shall be fixed, set up, or put into<lb/>any Party-Wall, or End or Side-Wall, except where two or more Houses or other<lb/>Buildings shall be laid together, and used and occupied as one House or Build-<lb/>ing; then and in every or any such Case, the Master or Head Builder, Master<lb/>Bricklayer, or Master Workman, or other Person causing such Building to be<lb/>erected and built, shall for every Offence or Default as aforesaid, forfeit and pay<lb/>the Sum of Fifty Pounds, one Moiety thereof to be paid to the Overseer or<lb/>Overseers of the Poor of the Parish, Precinct, or Place wherein the Offence was<lb/>committed, for the Use of such Poor only; and the other Moiety thereof to the<lb/>Person or Persons suing for the same; and the like Penalty of Fifty Pounds<lb/>for every nine Months that such Defects and Irregularities shall continue."<p>Resolved, That this Committee will meet on Monday the 5th Day of October<lb/>next, at Six in the Evening, at the Sun Tavern in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and<lb/> will then and there receive Notice in Writing of any Offences committed<lb/>against the said Act, or that any such Notices may be sent from Time to Time<lb/>to the Clerk.
