< | <head>1826. <sic>Dec.<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></sic> 22.<lb/><add>Procedure</add> Collectanea <add>Code</add><lb/>(1.)</head> <p><note>Publicity.</note></p> <p><sic>Morn Chron Dec.<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></sic> 22<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> 1826.</p> <p>We call the particular attention of our readers to<lb/>a trial in the Court of Common Pleas yesterday,<lb/>reported in another column, in which they will<lb/>see the extent to which it is wished to carry the hostility<lb/>to the Press.</p> <p>The subject of the trial was the publication<lb/>of some Police proceedings. we shall now<lb/>merely confine ourselves to the doctrine which it<lb/>is attempted to enforce respecting reporting in general.</p> <p>Two points were more particularly<lb/>mooted; 1<hi rend="superscript">st.</hi> the utility of Police Reports; and 2<hi rend="superscript">dly</hi> the<lb/>Law on the subject.</p> <p>It was admitted by <sic>M<hi rend="superscript">r</hi></sic> Sergeant Wilde<lb/>that Police reports were not justifiable in point<lb/>of Law, but he contended that still they were productive<lb/>of great public benefit; and though he allowed<lb/>that a verdict must go against his Client, yet he<lb/>thought the damages ought to be as moderate as<lb/>possible.</p> <p>It is by disregarding both Judges and Counsel,<lb/>that great benefit to the Country has often been<lb/>produced by Juries. In fact, Counsel on both sides<lb/>have an evident interest in encouraging this system<lb/>of finding verdicts, for it encourages Attorneys to bring<lb/>actions; and, although Barristers are great friends<lb/>to their clients, in matters that merely concern<lb/>parties in an action, they are naturally greater friends<lb/>to their own order.
