Of Falshoods in general Diss. Punishment

Quality by what considerations governed We now come to consider of the punishments
which it may be proper to apply to the several
modes species of falshood . These according to the principles
we set out with ought each of them to be as
strongly as possible characteristic of the several offences.

on the side of encrease by the addition of circumstances
of an afflictive nature : on that of encrease and that
of diminution both , by the degree of publicity .

them are somewhat different , the characteristic punishments
ought accordingly to be different .
Punishment applied in consideration of falshood is either a part of the ordinary punishment or an extra-punishment. Punishment applied on the score of falshood
of any kind will come in sometimes in the character
of a part of the ordinary punishment ; as in the
cases where the falshood is of the essence of the offence: at
other times in that of an extra-punishment as in
the cases where the falshood is an accidental concomitant .
