Happiness and Unhappiness. Their Kinds.
those pleasures, But the same thing which is the proper instrument
of one sort of pleasure being either the of either capable serving
itself as the instrument of many others, or convertible
into such different ones as are, by giving him one
sort of instrument, it gives him the choice as far as the value of that instrument goes of almost
every sort of pleasure it can give him.
By giving a man money or money's worth
it gives him all the pleasures that are to be had
for money. To Ethics it then belongs to assist
him in his choice. To Ethics therefore belong
all ulterior speculations concerning the particular
sorts of Pleasures.
As to Jurisprudence, not having any particular
pleasures to create, there is no particular pleasure
of which it has for that purpose any occasion to speak:
and for that of which there is no occasion to speak,
it is needless to find a name. It has no pleasures
I say to create: but some it has to proscribe.
For these particular ones therefore, it is find must find
by necessity to find a name. under a necessity of finding a name. Such are those of
Adultery, Drunkenness, Gaming under certain circumstances,
and a few others. But of these pleasures the
specific names are taken from the respective actions which
produce them: names already current, and in
the mouth of every one. And as to generic ones, there
are none of those specific ones but what are comprized
in these.

[d] It is proper to be observed, that the all the business
we have with Pains and Pleasures at present,
is to class them: to distribute them under such
general titles as we shall have occasion to make
mention of in the progress of the work. To ennumerate
them will not be necessary. Such minute
divisions as serve to resolve them into their ultimate
species belong rather to Ethics.
