P. Criminality
Act. 19.G.3
18
mention made of
the old Act 19/G.3.4
which being prior
could not limit the
magnitude of an estate
grounded
on the Act of the 34.
— This was to thicken
the confusion and is
another proof of
mala fides.

Another stroke trait of Mr King: — another symptom item to be
added to the catalogue of internal symptoms
of mala fides: for the arts and, to conceal guilt,
or otherwise to escape the final consequences of it, are among the
indications of the consciousness of it. I mean the endeavour
to thicken the confusions by encumbering the question with an Act
and that a voluminous one, which has nothing to do with it.

In my account of the letter I have spoken dwelt
hitherto but of on an Act: the act of the 34th of the King.
the 2d Penitentiary Contract Act: the Penitentiary Contract
Act: in a for shortness my Act. I may call
it so without much impropriety: — for surely I have
paid a price for it. I have confined myself to this
Act: it being the only one which is any thing to the
purpose: I mean if any one Minister, in the Duke's place, whose design was to obey
it. No so Mr the Duke of Portland King. To thicken the confusion, he
makes the Duke tack to it another Act: that of
the 19th of the King: the first Penitentiary Act: — he
makes him "examine" them together — "understand the object"
of them both: a like and as in good truth he does of
both alike.
I say
