 I submitted as above to be dragged to it as above. I 
made him however go in first, saying I should 
attend without needing to be called in obey if called 
in, but begging not to be I might not called in, so long 
as it could be avoided. It could not long be avoided. 
On my entrance I found three long 
funeral faces, to which I added a fourth, doubtless 
the longest of the four. Mr Secretary Long 
in a state of visible uneasiness, and with a manner 
as cold and discouraging as possible, came 
out with some [irrelevant and long ago superseded] 
observations difficulties about the supposed unfitness 
of the land  — the very objections which which he had 
himself proposed to me as well as purchased to 
me. The ground of the objections will be best from 
understood from the mention made of them in the 
Documents. [See I.   ] Mr Lothertor, not 
Reference to behind hand with Mr Secretary added an observation 
equally irrelevant, of which I remember 
nothing distinctly, further than that Mr Nepean, 
with the acquiescence of Mr Long, undertook to satisfy 
him and did satisfy him that it was so. I believe 
the object was to represent any further ulterior purchase 
 — such as that of Mr Wise's land — as unnecessary. 
But this observation suited was as <add>not better ill adapted to</add> Mr Long's purpose
