Ever since the accession of the late Prince
of Orange father to the present, to the Statholdership
of the united provinces, the Custom of
hanging Deserters has been laid aside, if they
have been condemned to work at the fortifications.
It is to be supposed that within the
space of 13 years, the number of these unhappy
People must become very considerable.
The Prince Statholder being moved with compassion
for their situation, took occasion, on
the birth of the Princess his daughter, to
order all of them to be
set at liberty, on condition
that they should return to the regiments
from whence they had deserted.
