Another reason why if any thing is thought of
being done at in this way at the black sea why It may
be proper I should go there is that a possibility & probability
that however much other circumstances may
favour my friend's building ships in this way at
that place a scarcity of timber may be a cause of delay
if not an unsurmountable detail. When I was there
I saw timber drawn by land carriage from a great
distance for the use of the Crown, notwithstanding on the
Polish side of the Dnieper there are immense forests of
excellent timber.

The most considerable possession is
timber which lies so as to be easily floated down the Dnieper
are in the hands of my friend the Polish Count from whose
residence I wrote you 2 or 3 letters during my first excursion
from Petersbourg. It so happened that during my stay with him
came a Russian General for the purpose of making purchase a large
contract with him for timber. The Count partly out of aversion
to the having any dealings with that particular man and partly
