I forgot to tell you last night what stay I proposed to make at
Whitechurch and.. Totton respectively but I cannot help thinking
I told you in a former letter. At together I propose to stay
about a fortnight: much longer I cannot. the very outride of all
will be three weeks. I have been engaged for months just to go and
spend a few days with Mr Lind at Colchester: the letters from
thence begin to be pressing, and reasons are given why we
not make it much later. The first week I shall spend at Whitechurch.
I shall then go over to Totton for another week: part of which I
hope will coincide with the time of your being there. I shall return
by the way of Whitechurch. Probably in the course of the week I
allot to Whitechurch I may take a ride over and dine with
Mr Millford.
A propos The Dr has got a burning Mirror, I have a
notion: I am sure he had one; if he has not parted with it
along with the other vanities. It would melt Lead.. Do you
recollect seeing it at Totten? However if it be there, twould be
a rare opportunity for trying our burning experiments: as
far as it can be done without Mercury. Venus without Mercury
is a well known wit for a sentiment: but as for managing
Jupiter without Mercury, it is what I doubt cannot cleverly
be done. Jupiter, you many or may not remember is a
name given by our queendom friend, the Roman Poets, to the
air.
Letters come to Whitechurch 3 times a week. Wednesdays, Fridays,
and Sundays. A letter from Chatham of the Wednesday would reach
Whitechurch of on the Friday.
Tuesday Septr 1774
Twan Firn Egham (in hurry) o'clock. just breakfasted and jogging
